Every trip comes with the same quiet worry: who’s going to take care of my plants?
We hear this question constantly here at Everblossom — it’s actually the reason our vacation plant care service exists in the first place. Most houseplants can handle a weekend alone just fine. But longer trips, Vancouver’s damp winters, or a sun-drenched summer apartment can all take a real toll if no one’s checking in. Here’s how to protect your plants before you go — and what to do if you’re going to be away longer than a few days.
1. Water Deeply, One Day Before You Leave
Give your plants a thorough watering about 24 hours before your trip — not the morning you’re rushing out the door. And if the soil’s still damp from a recent watering, skip it. Overwatering stresses roots just as badly as underwatering does.
2. Move Plants Out of Direct Sunlight
Plants sitting in a bright, south-facing window dry out fast — especially if you’re heading somewhere for a stretch of Vancouver’s rare sunny days. Shift them somewhere with bright, indirect light instead, so they lose less moisture while you’re gone.
3. Group Plants Together for Humidity
Clustering your plants creates a small humid microclimate around them, which slows moisture loss. Simple, free, and surprisingly effective.
4. Trim Dead or Yellowing Leaves
A quick prune before you travel means your plant isn’t wasting water and energy on leaves it’s already given up on. Healthy tissue uses water far more efficiently.
5. Hold Off on Fertilizer
Skip feeding your plants right before a trip. Fertilizer pushes new growth — and new growth needs consistent water it won’t be getting while you’re away.
6. Consider Self-Watering Tools for Trips Over a Week
For longer getaways, self-watering pots, watering spikes, or a simple drip system can bridge the gap. They work well for most common houseplants, though nothing beats an actual person checking in.
7. For Two Weeks or Longer, Get Real Eyes on Your Plants
This is the one people skip, and it’s the one that matters most. A quick visit every few days catches problems — a leaking pot, a pest, a drooping leaf — before they become permanent damage. This is exactly why we started offering plant boarding in the first place: your plants get a real check-in, not just a hopeful watering schedule and fingers crossed.
